Two wolves killed in the Chignik Lake area after a woman died in a wolf attack did not have rabies, the state Department of Health and Social Services reported today.The two animals underwent tests at the Alaska State Virology Laboratory in Fairbanks that revealed no evidence of the virus, according to a press release from the department.
The two wolves are believed to have been involved in the death of Candice Berner, a 32-year-old teacher who was attacked while she was jogging. The wolves were killed in a hunt that followed Berner's death. The state Department of Fish and Game has since called off hunting for additional wolves.
The Health and Social Services department says the animals will be tested for additional diseases, including the distemper virus.
