Legislators Acted Wisely When They Stopped Bad Wildlife Bill

Letters / Anchorage Daily News / June 3, 2008

A big second to Bill Sherwonit's letter "Lawmakers were right to dump wildlife management legislation," May 12, with thanks to Sen. Hollis French and his staff for considering the public's opportunity to participate in wildlife policy matters through the initiative process.

Not only would this legislation have caused wanton waste of a valuable resource, but we have to ask ourselves, is it really ethical to mow down grizzly bears and wolverines from the air.

For the 40 years that I've lived in Alaska, I've known many professional biologists who abhor this type of predator control, and consider it unethical.

Before the session ended, Gov. Sarah Palin secretly tried to attach this terrible legislation to Sen. Bill Wielechowski's SB 273 which would have made heinous cruelty to animals a felony, so consequently, SB 273 did not reach the floor.
