Eklutna Opens Property to Single Wolf Trapper

Associated Press / January 3, 2008

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A trapper will try to cull the pack of wolves that has been attacking Anchorage dogs.

The Eklutna Native Corporation is opening its lands to trapping between Eagle River and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough with the hope that removing one or two wolves will discourage attacks.

A single trapper will be allowed on the private land to set traps.

Eklutna Tribal Administrator Don Karabelnikoff says a resident's dog was attacked.

The state Department of Fish and Game says three dogs have died in wolf attacks over the last month. Some of the attacks occurred while the owners were with their dogs.

State game officials say similar wolf attacks occurred about 13 years ago and limited trapping seemed to stop them.
