To the editor:
I read Mr. Art Greenwalt's letter on Dec. 27, 2007, stating that perhaps they just wanted to control the bison of the Great Plains. It wasn't about control.
I hope Mr. Greenwalt would go back to the history of the Plains. From 1870s on up to 1890, Gen. Nelson Miles had a leading role in the campaign against the Native American tribes. During his campaign, he made a statement that if you get rid of the buffalo, you will get rid of the Indians.
From that time on, with the help of the railroad, the bison were exterminated along with a good number of Native Americans. A real tragedy.
I remember a bit about history but don't claim to know a heck of a lot about game management. I will leave that to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and the people who depend on game to survive. They called for help to thin out wolves and grizzlies in select areas.
I say let them do so in the most efficient way.
