Wolf Attacks a Chance to Share Feeling of Becoming the Hunted

Letters / Anchorage Daily News / January 1, 2008

I have always been a huge fan of this funny thing called karma. The problem is, I don't think many Alaskans seem to understand or care about it much. Take, for example, the recent spate of wolf attacks and close encounters people have been having in the wild. We as people feel it is perfectly fine to go around blasting these animals from aircraft (or whatever means necessary). Today, it seems that the tables are turning. Maybe the wolves are fed up with us, and think it's time for their own predator management program! (They keep killing all of our moose and caribou!) It's a classic case of the hunter becoming the hunted.

Unfortunately, I know that our knee-jerk reaction will only result in more dead wolves instead of identifying the real problems at hand and fixing them. But maybe, just once, we will be able to relate to that feeling of fear, circled by an airplane or snowmachine ... that loss of control. Knowing that your life may very well be ending, and for what? You'll never know.
