Park Service Petitioned to Stop Katmai Bear Hunt

Jason Moore / KTUU-TV / August 16, 2007

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A group of bear viewing guides and wildlife enthusiasts wants the National Park Service to take emergency action to limit brown bear hunting in Katmai National Preserve.

The group claims the state of Alaska, which manages hunting, is allowing an over-harvest of area bears.

Former Gov. Tony Knowles, a former Game Board chairman, and several environmental groups wrote the Park Service demanding action.

Both the Park Service and state Fish and Game say action is not necessary at this time.
