Black bear hunting in Chugach State Park has been going on for a long time. It used to be that you would see many bears on the Crow Pass trail without looking; now you don't see them when you look.
Legal black bear hunting was initiated in the park because some inexperienced hikers and campers complained about being harassed. The majority of the hikers in Chugach State Park expect to see bears; however, they are more likely to see one on O'Malley Road.
Hunting should be stopped to let the black bear population grow.
