Zoos Poor Places for Elephants; Let Maggie Live in a Sanctuary

Letters / Anchorage Daily News / June 23, 2007

I was glad to learn that Maggie the elephant will be moved from the Alaska Zoo to a more suitable environment. I am very concerned, however, that Maggie may be transferred to another zoo. Elephants have special physical and psychological needs that are beyond the means of zoos.

I urge the Alaska Zoo to send Maggie to an animal sanctuary. The Performing Animal Welfare Society sanctuary in California is probably the closest location to Alaska. There is also the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. Maggie deserves the opportunity to live out her life among other elephants and in an setting that is as close to her natural environment as possible.
