Board of Game Did Nothing to Reduce or Stop the Harvest of McNeil Bears in Neighboring Katmai National Preserve

Letters / Anchorage Daily News / March 13, 2007

I just spoke with Alex deMarban at the Anchorage Daily News.  He has agreed to add "on state land" after "... allow bear hunting".  As the ADN article currently stands it is misleading.

The Board of Game did nothing to reduce or stop the harvest of McNeil bears in neighboring Katmai National Preserve, even though the number of McNeil bears is at a 20 year low, and the harvest of bears inclusive of those from McNeil for the past four years has been more than double the agency established harvest levels inside Katmai National Preserve. We heard testimony from biologists, bear viewing commercial interests and others who made it clear that harvest levels in Katmai were excessive.

Six of the 11 McNeil proposals called for reducing, stopping, putting under strict permit, or shortening the bear hunting season in Katmai. Each was soundly defeated 7 to zero.
