Native Group Demands Alaska's Board of Game Chairman Be Fired

Steve MacDonald / KTUU / NBC / November 13, 2006

Anchorage, Alaska - There's more outcry over remarks made by the chairman of the Alaska Board of Game.

Today Ken Johns, the president of Ahtna Inc., sent a letter to Alaska Gov. Frank Murkowski demanding that he fire Ron Somerville for remarks he made during an Oct. 7 public hearing. Three members of the Alaska Native community were scheduled to testify at the hearing, but when they didn't show up, Somerville said to the crowd, "There must have been a run on free beer or something."

Somerville later apologized.

Somerville did not return KTUU-TV's calls this afternoon. A spokesman for the governor says he can't comment because he hasn't seen the letter.
