Mr. Somerville Was Completely Out of Line

Letters / Juneau Empire / November 7, 2006

This must be the biggest mistake of Mr. Somerville's career thus far (see "Board of Game chairman apologizes for remark" in the Nov. 3 Empire). Seriously, what was going through his head? Perhaps this is the truth on how he feels about Alaska Natives. Personally, I'm angered and plain confused as to why a person who is supposed to be professional and educated would make such remarks.

Mr. Somerville made two very offensive remarks in the same meeting, one directed toward Alaska Natives and the second directed toward a Native woman. I think Mr. Somerville was completely out of line and he insulted every Native person. I'm glad to see the Alaska Federation of Natives taking action to these insults.
