With all the attention on the Board of Game's proposal to open areas close to Pack Creek to brown bear hunting, another important issue has had little attention. Even the well-written Empire article of Oct. 20 missed the most important component of Proposal 40, which also is up before the Board of Game. This proposal has to do with same-day flying/shooting of wolves, or aerial wolf shooting in Upper Lynn Canal.
This proposal is flawed for many reasons. No biological data exists to prove this proposal would increase the moose population in Upper Lynn Canal. And the area has few moose to begin with. Biologists in the area think it is bear predation of moose calves which is to blame for the small moose population. As stated at the hearings, aerial wolf shooting is a barbaric practice that brings unneeded negative attention to Southeast Alaska. I urge people to write to the Board of Game opposing Proposal 40.
