In response to the Compass by Bill Sherwonit ("Game management cries for balance," Oct. 14), I disagree with him. The Murkowski administration has done a better job of increasing game in Alaska, in spite of the handicaps placed on the Alaska Department of Fish and Game by then-Gov. Tony Knowles.
The only mistake Gov. Frank Murkowski made was not removing all of the Knowles-appointed or hired personnel within the Department of Fish and Game when he took office. The increase of moose for Bush Alaska would have been greater.
Gov. Murkowski, with legislative support, has done more for Bush Alaska than any other governor has. The balance of Alaska wildlife management personnel is still too far to the left and is not fully supporting the needs of Bush Alaska.
Knowles, if elected, will set Alaska back four years. Knowles failed to provide any increase in game for Bush Alaska when he was in office. And Knowles will fail to do so again.
