A Change of Name is Needed for Alaska Boards of Game, Fisheries

Letters / Anchorage Daily News / May 15, 2006

What's in a name? Corporations spend millions if not billions of dollars on identifying the name that best fits with the look and feel of their organization, as well as conveys that look and feel to their customers. Toward that end, I think Alaska should change the name of the Department of Fish and Game to the Department of Wildlife Conservation. The Board of Fisheries and Board of Game should become the Board of Wildlife Conservation.

The Board of Fisheries and Board of Game conveys a sense of a bunch of individuals who are managing Alaska's wildlife as their own big game reserve; in fact, that appears to be the case.

The Board of Wildlife Conservation reflects more accurately what the function of these boards is supposed to be.

While the current actions of the boards reflect their current name, changing the names to the Board of Wildlife Conservation would hopefully be the first step in realigning the boards' focus.
