Man Fined, Jailed for Killing Musk Ox in Alaska

Alaska Digest / Anchorage Daily News / May 9, 2006

Kotzebue - A man charged with killing five musk oxen and leaving them to rot on the tundra near Cape Thompson last September pleaded no contest in Kotzebue District Court to five counts of wanton waste, Alaska State Troopers reported.

At a court hearing on March 30, Ken W. Hamby, 49, was fined $2,500 and sentenced to seven days in jail. His hunting license was suspended until March 30, 2009.

Hamby, of Point Hope, shot three cows in one of the state's biggest un-permitted slaughters of musk oxen, said Jim Dau, state Fish and Game area biologist in Kotzebue, and failed to salvage meat from any of the five animals killed. The taking of musk ox in Alaska is closely regulated as to season and number taken from particular herds.
