Moose in Alaska's Unit 20A
Letters / Anchorage Daily News / October 5, 2005

To the editor:

I've just returned from 10 days of moose hunting in District 1 of Unit 20A, near Clear. I'm very concerned about the moose population in that area. I'm a reasonably good moose hunter and hunted with a very accomplished hunter from North Pole.

In 10 days of hunting we saw five moose, only one of which was a bull. In this area we always saw cow moose, but after last year's slaughter of cows, we now see very few. They are almost nonexistent.

Alaska Department of Fish and Game allowed a registration cow hunt in 2004 and, as I understand it, overshot their harvest goal by three times. There is another cow registration hunt scheduled to begin Oct. 5. Whatever the harvest goal is in District 1 of Unit 20A, it is too much. There are virtually no cows there, and that hunt should be canceled!
