Watch Out for Your Pets in a Land of Wolves and Bears

Letters / Juneau Empire / May 5, 2005

I am deeply sorry for the individual who lost his pet beagle. Losing a pet is never easy.

There has been a lot of controversy raging around the fate of the wolf. There has also been animosity towards Fish and Game and the Forest Service for not putting out warning signs.

Last I checked, this is Alaska. Do you honestly think that this lone wolf is the only dangerous creature that you and your pet have to be concerned about?

There are more wolves around Juneau than this one. Bears and eagles regularly kill cats and small dogs. I've never heard of a English mastiff being attacked by an eagle. It may not be from Fish and Game or the USFS, but here is a blanket warning.

You are in Alaska. There are animals here that view your pet (and you) as a snack. Act appropriately.
